Having reminded myself about The Color and The Shape with yesterday’s post, I popped it in my Discman this morning and have been rocking out ever since. Let there be no mistake: Dave Grohl is a badass. I had forgotten just how much so. Listening to him scream his balls off, “sometimes I feel I’m getting stuck / between the handshake and the fuck” I immediately came around. What a departure from the melodic, whiney stuff I usually listen to.
My Discman, now going on four years old, is on its last legs. It flat won’t play burned CDs except when it really feels like it. Bryan and I are going to Northgate Mall some time this weekend to buy new stereo systems, his kitchen system having just blown its woofer. I’ll be entering the next generation of music appreciation with the purchase of an mp3 CD player, and then afterwards I will be smashing my current, functionless player onto the sidewalk with all the force I can muster. Maybe my plans for it are a little harsh, having dropped it onto hard surfaces any number of times over the years, but when I can’t listen to Out of the Shadow because the little bitch can’t keep his laser pointing in one direction, it’s go time.
I’m going to see modern dance tonight for the second time in my life, with Sarah. Here’s to hoping I understand more this time around. After the last time, a UW School of Dance production, I asked a question of the organizers to the effect, “I had no idea what was going on onstage – am I missing something, or is that normal?” Their smiling answer made me feel even more retarded. But I learned a valuable lesson: never, ever admit that you don’t deeply understand art of any kind.
